May 2011 tornado 龍捲風(Joplin, Missouri)

On May 22, 2011, a destructive tornado first touched down at about 5:35 p.m. CDT (2235 UTC) and tracked eastward across the city and across Interstate 44into rural portions of Newton and Lawrence counties. It was reported to have been about 0.75 miles (1.21 km) in width and 7 miles (11 km) long. Many houses and businesses were flattened and some blown away in Joplin, particularly in the section between 13th and 32nd Streets across the southern part of the city. The tornado narrowly missed the downtown area. St. John's Regional Medical Centerwas heavily damaged, with many windows and the exterior walls damaged, and the upper floors destroyed. Many people were reported to have been trapped in destroyed houses. The Weather Channel video showed entire neighborhoods flattened. The town's emergency manager stated that about 30% of the city was damaged.
